Care & Growing Guide

Whether you're a first-time gardener or a seasoned green thumb, these tips will help you grow with confidence. At Llanso Manor Gardens, we believe that anyone can garden — you just need a little know-how and a lot of love for plants!

Starting Plants from Seed

Growing from seed is one of the most rewarding parts of gardening. Here's how to get started:

  • Choose the right seeds — Start with easy-to-grow varieties like sunflowers, zucchini, basil, or lettuce if you're new to seed starting.
  • Use quality seed-starting mix — Regular potting soil can be too dense. A lightweight seed-starting mix gives seedlings the best start.
  • Plant at the right depth — A general rule: plant seeds 2–3 times as deep as the seed is wide. Check your seed packet for specifics.
  • Keep soil moist, not soggy — Use a spray bottle to gently water seedlings. Overwatering is the #1 cause of seedling failure.
  • Provide plenty of light — Seeds need bright light once they sprout. A south-facing window or a grow light works great.
  • Be patient! — Germination times vary. Some seeds sprout in a few days; others can take a few weeks.

Houseplant Care Basics

Houseplants bring life and beauty indoors. Keep them thriving with these simple guidelines:

  • Light — Most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid placing them in direct harsh sun, which can scorch leaves.
  • Watering — When in doubt, underwater rather than overwater. Check the soil with your finger — if the top inch is dry, it's time to water.
  • Humidity — Many houseplants (especially tropicals) love humidity. Mist leaves occasionally or place a small tray of water near your plants.
  • Feeding — Feed houseplants with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Ease off in fall and winter.
  • Repotting — When roots start poking out of the drainage holes, it's time to size up to a slightly larger pot.

Growing Herbs

Herbs are perfect for beginners and experienced gardeners alike — they're useful, fragrant, and surprisingly easy to grow!

  • Indoors — Basil, chives, mint, and parsley do well on a sunny windowsill. Make sure pots have drainage holes.
  • Outdoors — Rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage thrive in garden beds or containers with full sun and well-draining soil.
  • Harvesting — Regular harvesting encourages bushier, more productive plants. Never remove more than one-third of the plant at a time.
  • Mint tip — Grow mint in its own container — it spreads aggressively and will take over a garden bed if left unchecked!

General Garden Tips

  • Know your zone — Find your USDA Plant Hardiness Zone to understand which plants will thrive in your climate and when to plant.
  • Improve your soil — Great gardens start with great soil. Add compost regularly to improve drainage, fertility, and soil structure.
  • Water deeply and less often — Deep, infrequent watering encourages roots to grow deeper, making plants more drought-tolerant.
  • Mulch — A layer of mulch around plants retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and regulates soil temperature.
  • Keep a garden journal — Track what you plant, when you plant it, and how it grows. It's the best way to learn and improve season after season.
  • Embrace mistakes — Every gardener loses plants. It's part of the process! Each season is a new opportunity to learn and grow.
